Fanatec ClubSport Wheel Base

The Fanatec ClubSport wheel base currently has a release date of December 2011, at the time of release there will be two compatible wheel rims for it, the Formula wheel and the BMW M3 GT wheel. There will be many additional wheels coming out for the ClubSport after that including ones for rallying, drifting, NASCAR and even a classic style wheel which sounds good for all you GT Legends fans. There's also rumoured to be a second Formula 1 style wheel coming next year so you never know, there could possibly be a branded Fanatec Mercedes F1 wheel out in 2012.

The wheel base itself appears to be made to a very high standard with a metal outer body and inner parts and no plastic to be seen, this is certainly designed to be a serious piece of engineering and not a toy. It features a quick release system which will allow sim racers to switch between wheels quickly without having to turn anything off or exit the sim. There are a number of screw holes on the front of the base put there to attach future accessories such as fixed paddle shifters like on the Thrustmaster T500 RS. They may also be used to fix on rev/telemetry displays including Android/iPhones.

One unique feature of the Club Sport wheel base is the ability to manually adjust the tension of the force feedback belts from the outside of the unit using several bolts at the front. This means if the tension is too strong or too weak for you, you can adjust it without having to take the unit apart. The electronics have also been designed with future upgrades in mind, perhaps to allow for full compatibility with future racing sims and games, and future steering wheels.

The base boasts two force feedback motors giving very strong and fast wheel movement and up to 900 degrees of rotation. As with previous Fanatec wheels you will be able to make adjustments directly through the wheel using the buttons and LED display. These parameters which can be adjusted here include force feedback strength, steering sensitivity, vibration strength, linearity, dead zone, drift mode and ABS. With the ABS setting turned up the vibration motors in the wheel will vibrate when the car wheels are locked up under braking. You'll also be able to change the force feedback spring, damper and strength settings on the wheel while in the sim, this saves having to exit the sim to make any changes needed.

Overall it's clear to see Fanatec have built the ClubSport wheel base with future additions and upgrades in mind so it shouldn't be a case of the unit being out of date a few months after buying it and something better being brought out. It will hopefully serve you well for many years. The ClubSport is priced at $450 or €450 and the wheel rims will be priced between 150 to 300 USD and EUR.
