Logitech G27 Review

The Logitech G27 steering wheel, pedals and shifter set was released in 2009 as the replacement for the extremely popular G25 which set new standards for build quality and function among gaming steering wheels. To review the Logitech G27 it is inevitable going to be compared to the G25 due to it effectively being an upgraded G25. Some of it’s most unique features were it’s 900 degrees of rotation wheel, clutch pedal and separate gear stick shifter. The G25 built a reputation for being strong and reliable and for a few years was the only realistic choice for the serious sim racer.

The G27 is essentially Logitech's upgraded version of the G25 with only subtle changes made. This may seem a little lazy on Logitech's part but when you consider how good the G25 was it’s not such a bad thing. Many of the changes are inside the units and can’t been seen but make a noticeable difference such as improved force feedback, far less noise when turning the wheel and a better quality gear shifter change. Unlike the G25 however, the H shifter can’t be switched to a sequential shifter.

The G27 now comes with a row of shifter LED lights above the centre of the wheel which allows you to know exactly when to change up without having to keep looking at the on screen rev counter if there is one. To have these lights in your eye line though, you need to have the wheel fairly high in relation to the TV or monitor screen. Ideally they would be in the top of the wheel like an F1 steering wheel. The wheel also now has 6 buttons on the front compared to the G25’s 2 and has the same long, easy to use shifter paddles behind the wheel.

The pedals are very similar to the G25’s but you can now adjust the faces of each pedal slightly from slide to side to position them how feels best for you. There are slight changes made to the internals of the pedals unit but they aren’t that noticeable to the user.

One of the big advantages to owing a G27 or 25 is that because of their popularity, virtually every sim or racing game made in the last few years is designed to be instantly compatible and recognise the Logitech device so it’s just a case of plug and play. You can use the G27 on the PC, Playstation 3 and it’s also compatible with some PS 2 games. It cannot be used on the XBOX 360 though. You’ll also find that most sim rigs are made with the Logitech wheels in mind and are usually pre-drilled to line up with the nut holes at the base of the wheel and pedal unit.

So overall the Logitech G27 is a good all round wheel, pedal and shifter set. It isn’t particularly fancy looking and doesn’t have any car manufacture branding like the Fanatec Porsche wheels or the Thrustmaster Ferrari wheels but it’s very functional, feels good and should serve you well for many years.
